The canal is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

This bridge is next to the highest lock on the canal, the top lock and is a "Canal bridge, on Leeds - Liverpool Canal, 1816. Stone. Stilted segmental- headed arch spanning the lower approach to Top Lock, (one of series of seven q.v.); buttress piers, bands, parapets with flat coping; walls are battered and curve inwards towards the centre; the bridge is structurally integral with the entrance to the lock, north coping forming one side of the footbridge over the lock.", and is a Grade II English Heritage listed building.

Like most arch bridges on this canal the stones of the arch are painted white to aid navigation, especially necessary when entering the lock as they are always the narrowest part of the canal.
