On Mt. Desrt Island, within Acadia National Park, is Sand Beach on the southern part of the island, situated between two rocky points.
To get there, you must enter the park. The fee (2015) is $25/car for a week pass. There is parking; however, there is clearly not enough, so go off peak times. There is also a shuttle bus that runs the loop.
At the parking lot is a changing facility/showers and a kiosk that tells about the beach. From there, you walk down a stepped path a couple hundred feet to the beach itself.
The beach is about 290 yards long and wide. The ocean is...well typical of beaches of Maine - the temperature rarely gets higher than 55 degrees. The 'sand' is unusual - it is composed of mostly shell fragments from thousands of years of being pounded by ocean waves. It feels a little different that a granite beach when you walk on it with your bare toes.
Type of beach: Natural
