The Grotto is a Roman Catholic sanctuary in Portland, Oregon. Its gift shop also serves as a Museum of sorts.
The sculpture depicts a very realistic woman holding a young child. A sign at the site indicates that the artist, John De Andrea used polyester resin for the work which was created in 1997 and moved here in 2009. The work clearly seeks to evoke similar images of Mary and the infant Jesus.
