"Mounted atop a square shaft is a full-length figure of a Civil War soldier dressed in his uniform. He holds the barrel of his rifle by his side at chest level with his proper left hand, the barrel resting against his thigh and the stock placed by his foot. The soldier's proper right hand is placed on his hip. The shaft has castellated corners around the middle and is placed atop a square base with two steps at the bottom. On the lower front of the base is a relief of crossed flags and rifles."

DIFFERENCES NOTED BETWEEN THE INVENTORY LISTING AND YOUR OBSERVATIONS AND RESEARCH: The write-up doesn't mention the poem on the base:
The muffled drum's sad roll has beat
the soldier's last tattoo,
no more on life's parade shall meet
the brave and fallen few,
on fame's eternal camping ground their silent tents are spread,
and glory guards with solemn round
the bivouac of the dead.
Your marble minstrel's voiceless stone
in deathless song shall tell.
when many a vanquished year hath flown
the story how ye fell:
nor wreck nor change, nor winter's blight,
nor time's remorseless doom
can dim one ray of holy light
that gilds your glorious tomb.
