Pine Grove Cemetery is within Cumberland County and has over 3,100 interments.
Interestingly, there is a walking tour guide available at the visitors center for this cemetery.
Land for the cemetery was purchased from Bowdoin College in 1821. Two additional tracts were also obtained in 1886 and in 1973.
As a condition of each sale, Bowdoin College was deeded a row of plots to allocate as they wished. Traditionally, they were assigned to individuals and families who had given distinguished service to the College.
There are several famous people interred here including Joshua Chamberlain: Civil War Union Brigadier General, Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient and Governor of Maine.
On the Pine Street side of the cemetery is a receiving tomb used to store bodies in the winter. Once the ground softened in the spring those individuals received a proper burial.
