Three years after the American Revolution a deep recession severly affected farmers who had property but little cash to pay taxes and fell into debt. Moreover, because of the poor economy, property often sold for much less than its actual value. In Massachusetts, farmers became disenchanted with a state legislature and governor who seemed oblivious to their plight. In the fall of 1786, Daniel Shays led a group of men called Regulators into rebellion. This group included Jason Parmenter from Bernardston, MA.
The Massachusetts government called for volunteers to halt the rebellion. Jacob Walker of Whately, MA, was among the local men who responded to the call. Walker encountered Jason Parmenter in Northfield, MA and was shot and killed by Parmenter when he tried to serve a warrant for Parmenter's arrest.
