This grave is located near the graves of Brandon and Bruce Lee in Lake View Cemetery. The grave states that "Captain J.D. (Jefferson Davis) Howell perished at sea on steam ship Pacific, November 4th, 1875. Aged 34 years."
The S.S. Pacific was a 876 ton sidewheel steamship that sank after colliding with S.S. Orpheus. Of it's 275+ people onboard only 2 survived. JD Howell was not at fault for the collision as it was testified that the captain of the Orpheus had been drinking.
JD Howell is also notable for being the brother-in-law of Confederate President Jefferson Davis (perhaps why his name is shortened to J.D.)
