This sign is one of 22 along Water Street on the west side of the Sutton County Courthouse. This sign preserves the history of George H. MacDonald & Josie C. MacDonald, early pioneers and longtime innkeepers in Sonora.

The sign reads as follows:

"GEORGE H. MACDONALD
JOSIE C. MACDONALD

These Sutton County Pioneers, were married in Lampasas County in 1886 and came to Sonora in 1890 with their livestock. In 1895, they gave up ranching and moved into town, where they purchased the Wyatt Hotel located in the heart of the business district. After the death of George on December 24, 1899, “Mrs. Mac” remodeled and renamed the hotel, calling it The Hotel McDonald. She remained a sole proprietor for over 55 years, until her death at age 86. On January 15, 1956.

Children born of this marriage were: Estelle, Murdoch, and John Arthur. MacDonald grandchildren, by John Arthur: Joe Alice Wehner, Jerry Stone, and Norma Lowry.
