This sign is one of 22 along Water Street on the west side of the Sutton County Courthouse. This sign preserves the history of the Fields family and descendants in Sutton County.
The sign reads as follows:
"W.J. AND VIOLA GIBBONS FIELDS
W.J., born in 1868, came to Sutton Co. from his home in Manor, TX. in 1887 to operate ranchland his father Dr. J. D. Fields of Manor had owned since 1883. The land remains in the family in 1990. “Will” met Viola, daughter of Emory Gibbons, and Sonora. They married in 1894 and had these children:
Thelma Fields Johnson
Eleanor Fields Hopkins
John David Fields
Margaret Annie Fields
Mary Fields Perrine
William John Fields, Jr.
Herbert Wardlaw Fields
Fields – Johnson – Hopkins Families
