This memorial stands in Farragut Square in Washington, DC. David Glasgow Farragut was a flag officer of the United States Navy during the Civil War. Congress created three new ranks for him; Farragut was the first rear admiral, vice admiral, and admiral in the United States Navy. He is known for this order, "Damn the Torpedoes, Full Speed Ahead," at the Battle of Mobile Bay, in which he was victorious. Farragut remained on active duty for life, an honor accorded to only six other U. S. Naval officers.
