St. Simon and St. Jude is one of the finer small town churches one will encounter in the Maritimes, with a positively beautiful interior. While visiting the cemetery, be sure to take the time to visit the church as well.

While the town of Tignish was founded by Acadian settlers in 1799, a place of worship was not established for a further two years. In 1801, the Acadian settlers of the community built a log church that measured 30 by 25 feet. A second church, built at the same location in 1826 was moved near the location of the Dalton Schoolhouse in 1851. We presume that to be at or near the site of the present church. Given that, we assume that this cemetery was begun circa 1850, though it could well be older.

The cemetery is spread out behind a stone fence across Church Street from St. Simon and St. Jude Roman Catholic Church, with its entrance directly opposite that of the church. Still in use today, the cemetery holds well over 500 interments.

The brick High Gothic church is the work of famed New York architect, Patrick Charles Keely, the designer of over 600 Roman Catholic churches in eastern North America. The cornerstone was laid on June 9, 1859, with completion of the church coming about in 1860. The magnificent pipe organ was installed in 1882 while the church's interior decoration took place primarily in 1885. Standing 185 feet high at the top of the steeple, this is the largest church on Prince Edward Island.
