His death was reported in the Sydney Morning Herald as:
A lamentable occurrence took place near here this afternoon. The coach for Young left with a number of passengers, and about three miles out met the in-coming coach, where the drivers change. George
Miller, Cobb and Co 's manager at Young, and driver of the up-coach, had dismounted with the intention of changing seats, the reins being in the hands of Samuel Robinson, police-magistrate of Young. Mr. Robinson dropped one of the reins, which fell upon the horses, causing them to start. The driver with one hand on the rein and his foot on the brake, circled the horses in the hope of stopping them, but failed, and the coach upset. Mr. A. E Hopkins, of Roma, Darling Downs, Queensland, who was returning home to his wife and family after disposing of a lot of cattle at Wodonga, was so terribly injured that he died in a cart on the way to Grenfell.
The distance from Grenfell to Berrima is quite far today & to Roma in Queensland so much further. It is not known why he was buried in Berrima but one of his daughters who died aged 88 in 1975 is buried beside him.
The information about the accident was obtained from Trove Digitised Newspapers, the website listed below.
