Lt Walter M Billman was a member of the 6th Battalion, The Middlesex Regiment (British Army) when he was wounded during the Battle of the Somme (1 Jul - 18 Nov 1916). He was one of approximately 1.1 MILLION casualties suffered by both sides in that conflict.

He died of his wounds while convalescing on 6 November, 1916. He is buried in the family plot in Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Halifax.
