The statue stands in an area of Waterloo Place that seems to be set aside for those involved in the Crimean War. The memorial is in three parts: a lower grey, granite plinth, a central red, granite plinth and a bronze statue of Florence Nightingale on the top. The whole memorial stands about 5 metres (17 feet) high with the statue being lifesize.
The red granite part of the plinth has a bronze relief on each face together with a carved inscription (see photos).
The front face is inscribed "Florence Nightingale.O.M.". The relief shows a view of injured soldiers being delivered to the hands of hospital staff.
The next face is inscribed "Born May 12 1820" and the relief shows nurses, some looking tired siting in a common room.
The back face carries no inscription and the relief shows Florence being introduced to some dignitaries.
The last face is inscribed "Died Aug 13 1910" and the relief shows soldiers in hospital beds being attended to by the medical staff.
The statue shows Florence standing with an oil lamp in her right hand. She is wearing clothes that were probably the uniform of the nurses of her day.
The statue was sculpted by Arthur George Walker in 1867.
