The canal is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

The bridge is known as Methodist swing bridge and carries Green Lane over the canal.

There was originally a timber bridge at this point but was replaced by a steel manual bridge in the 20th Century. link

At some later point it was automated with a control panel controlled by a key carried by boaters. The road is single file and does not carry much traffic, so although it is automated it has no warning lights. The bridge has a weight limit of 8 tons.
