The canal is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

This wooden cantilever swing bridge is an accommodation bridge that connects fields on either side of the canal. On the towpath side the bridge connects to Downholland Hall Farm and the bridge is also known as Downholland Hall Bridge.

It is usually left in the open position to allow the canal boats priority access. link

It is in a poor state of repair and overgrown and looks like it has not been used for some time.
