The flag of Baden was first documented in 1361, the oldest still existing picture is from 1470.
The original meaning of the flag is not known anymore. There are two theories: it might be a modification of the coats of arms of the Counts of Lenzburg-Baden, or it might be a modification of the symbols of Habsburg.
