The National Baseball Hall of Fame inducted its first members on June 12, 1939. The first five charter members were: Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Honus Wagner, and Babe Ruth. Christy Mathewson was inducted posthumously having died the previous year. Seven future members of the Baseball Hall of Fame were also present at the ceremony. Also present were: Grover Alexander, Eddie Collins, Nap Lajoie, Connie Mack, George Sisler, Tris Speaker and Cy Young.
A bronze plaque on the building to the left of the main entrance is inscribed:
