The sign stands outside a small pub set back from the rest of the buildings on this road. According to this web page this is because it stands on the route of an older road, and records show that the earliest known record of the pub shows that it has been there since 1716.

The web page also tells us that traditionally church bell ringers were entitled to free beer, which suggests that this is where the bell ringers came for their free beer.

There is a picture of the pub on the web site showing it as being painted white. However it was refurbished in April 2015 and has now been stripped back to the brickwork.
Date of first pub on site: 1716
