The pub is a modern pub built on the side of Preston Docks next to the River Ribble.

Preston Docks were built in 1892 to provide Preston with an inland port on the River Ribble and was the largest single dock in Europe.

The river is tidal at this point and depending on the size of boats using the dock a river pilot was sometimes necessary.

The dock closed for commercial usage in 1981 and is now a marina for pleasure boats and has been redeveloped with apartments on one side and retail outlets on another, including the pub.
