County of statue: Lawrence County
location of bust: US 14A/85, between Cheyenne Crossing and Lead
Artist: David Adickes
Bust created: 2002

"Presidents Park features 20 foot tall busts of all the U.S. presidents. They were created by David Adickes who was inspired by nearby Mt. Rushmore. Presidents Park opened in 2003. The place was closed when I was there in 2006 so I could only get these photos through the fence. The park is officially closed now. It's been reported that the statues may be moved closer to Mount Rushmore. However, as of 2012, the park is still there and closed. The relief sculpture of Lincoln (first photo above) is just north of the park. Adickes opened a second Presidents Park in Williamsburg, VA in 2004. That location closed in 2010. Adickes also created a giant Sam Houston in Huntsville, TX." ~ RoadsideArchitecture.com

"At the same time, David was having trouble with his own Presidents Park, which he’d opened near Deadwood, S.D. The tourist window is narrow — just three months of summer — and when a half-million bikers show up every August in nearby Sturgis, it tends to drive away the family crowd.

"David said he tried to lure the bikers by offering 50-cent beer in the visitors center, but “they’re there for women and beer and to compare each other’s tattoos and bikes.”

"Only one out of 100 would leave the center to walk down the 3,000-foot path of the presidents. The South Dakota park is closed as David ponders moving it closer to Mount Rushmore." ~ The Washington Post: By John Kelly Columnist May 14, 2011
