Portside is the historical area of Maryborough that all transport and goods came through, as apart from the Mary River the early settlement was extremely isolated. PL Travers, OBE, the author of "Mary Poppins" was born here in 1899.

The more recent releasing of the movie "Saving Mr Banks" brought attention back to the birth place of Helen Lyndon Goff (upstairs, in the former bank building at 147 Richmond St, Maryborough, Qld, 4650.)
From the sign: "P L Travers was born Helen Lyndon Goff to parents Margaret and Travers Robert Goff in an upstairs bedroom of this former bank building. At the time, her father was the manager of the Australia Joint Stock Bank and the family lived a short time in the top storey."
As stated on the sign, the Queensland Government was a major sponsor of the statue and signage.
