On Georges Island within Boston Harbor is this Visitor Center for the Harbor Islands, in particular signs and artifacts of the forts and batteries on this and other islands.

The island is located at the mouth of Boston Harbor and is a main location for people to enjoy the islands. The only way there is by boat - there is a dock where ferries and water taxis arrive (the ferries run from about May to mid October). The islands are part of the Boston Harbor Islands Recreation Area.

The visitor center is in a brick building that once was used to house mines and nets used in WWII to protect Boston Harbor. The displays show artifacts from several eras. The fort was built in the mid 1800s and was used from the Civil War to WWII. Signs and displays show what life was like at the fort, including when it was used as a prison to house Confederate soldiers, diplomats and sympathizers; as an improved fort with recoiling cannons, and as the center of the local harbor defenses during WWII. There is also a short film shown.

There is a gift shop in the back, as well as bathroom facilities. Toward the front is an information desk manned by rangers.

There is a food stand next to the Visitor Center.
