When in Fort Macleod we noticed this red phone booth in front of the AGT building. This is a pay phone booth that seems not to be functioning at the time we were there.

There is a small plaque attached to the front of the phone booth:

Telephone Booth
1938
Donated to the Town of Fort Macleod by
Jake & Bernice Beemsterboer
of Twin Butte, Alberta

The AGT building is well preserved and for the past 5 years it is being used by Telus as an office. It is a cottage style structure of clinker-brick exterior walls and was designed by Peter Rule and built in 1938 for the telephone exchange.

A little history of the AGT:

Alberta Government Telephones was the telephone provider in most of Alberta from 1906 to 1991.

It was formed by the Liberal government of Alexander Cameron Rutherford in 1906 following the acquisitions by the government of several independent telephone companies. In 1908, AGT acquired the Bell Telephone Company's Alberta operations.

Before the end of the 1908, Alberta Government Telephones (AGT), strung Line No. 95 between Macleod and Lethbridge.
Year built or dedicated as indicated on the structure or plaque: 1938

Full Inscription (unless noted above):
