EN: The train station of Weil am Rhein is located west of the city center. The station area forms the boundary to the western town district Friedlingen.
Weil am Rhein is situated on the Rhine Valley route between Mannheim and Basel, which was completed in 1855 and today is one of the busiest lines of Germany. Since 1890 here is also the terminus of the Gartenbahn railway of Loerrach.
The station area covers a huge area with more than 20 parallel tracks. But only a small fraction of these are for passenger traffic, the remaining part is a former rail yard, which has been converted into a container terminal.
Today, Weil am Rhein is a station for RegioExpress and regional DB trains between Offenburg and Basel, and for the S5 to Loerrach which is operated since 2003 by the German subsidiary of SBB.
DE: Der Bahnhof von Weil am Rhein befindet sich westlich des Stadtzentrums. Das Bahnhofsareal bildet die Grenze zum westlichen Stadtteil Friedlingen.
Weil am Rhein liegt an der Rheintalstrecke zwischen Mannheim und Basel, die 1855 fertiggestellt wurde und bis heute eine der meistbefahrenen Strecken von Deutschland ist. Seit 1890 ist hier auch die Endstation der Gartenbahn von Lörrach.
Das Bahnhofsareal umfasst ein riesiges Gebiet mit über 20 parallelen Geleisen. Davon ist aber nur ein kleiner Bruchteil für den Personenverkehr bestimmt, der Rest gehört zu einem ehemaligen Rangierbahnhof, der zu einem Containerterminal umgebaut wurde.
Weil am Rhein ist heute eine Station für RegioExpress und Regionalzüge der DB zwischen Offenburg und Basel, sowie der S5 nach Lörrach, die seit 2003 von der deutschen Tochterfirma der SBB betrieben wird.
