This circa 1800 small wind-driven drainage mill was relocated to the Openluchtmuseum in 1922.
The signage board reads:
This little mill consists of a body and post, around which the body rotates. A wooden shaft runs through the post which transfers the wind power to an Archimedean screw via wooden gear wheels. This Archimedean screw raises the water, after which it flows away via the higher-level watercourse. In Dutch, this type of mill is also known as a spider mill ('spinnenkopmolen') due to its shape. From 1867 the meadows west of the centre of Gorredijk in Friesland stayed dry due to this mill. The mill was also used to flood the skating rink. Only when the Wouda pumping station near Lemmer (35 km away) was brought into use in 1920 did water management improve and the mill became redundant.
