The canal is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

The canal is no longer operational for commercial traffic but is popular with leisure boaters.

The bridge is a swing bridge and carries Crabtree Lane over the canal. It was originally a timber structure but was replaced with a steel bridge in 1978.

In 1999 the bridge was refurbished and an automated power system added together with road barriers. link

The bridge is always left in a locked position across the canal and only opened when a boat passes by. The control panel requires the use of a special key issued to all licensed boat operators.
