It is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.
At this point the milestone is 110.25 miles from the start at Leeds and 17 miles from the port of Liverpool.
Normally the milestones on this canal have two plates showing the distance from both Leeds and Liverpool. In this case the milestone is damaged with the Liverpool plate totally missing and the Leeds plate has some damage.
