In Hingham, off Mass. Route 3A, is the Boston Harbor Cruise - Boston Harbor Island Ferry Terminal at Hingham.

The terminal is located in a mixed residential and commercial space that once was the Hingham Shipyard. The terminal is located along Shipyard Drive. There are small signs directing you there. Before you park, check the information booth for the best lot to park in - you may be able to get one for reduced or no cost (too late for us - we already paid cash in the closest lot). The information booth is located right at the street. The place where you buy the tickets is down and alleyway about halfway between the road and the ferry dock.

The ticket office is a small space on the first floor of a building. The fees are posted, as well as the ferry schedule. Depending on the year, the ferry leaves for one of several of the Boston Harbor Islands, which are part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreational Area. The most visited island is Georges Islands, which contains a complete Civil War era fort, Fort Warren. Peddocks Island is the location of another fortification Fort Andrews, which at one time, held WWI Italian Prisoners of War. Lovells Island has batteries and is a popular place to camp. Spectacle Island is another popular place with great views and often is a location for special events. This is also where the MTBA T Commuter Ferry docks (I believe run by the same company). The ferry we had was a type of catamaran.

The view is usually great, though we went during foggy conditions. On the way to any of these islands, you will pass by and may even stop at other islands in the harbor. You could also see water fowl and other wildlife on the way.

The ferries are passenger only boats. From reading text on the web site, bikes are allowed on the ferries, but you cannot ride bikes on the islands.

The commuter ferry runs pretty much all year, though service will be stopped for bad weather, including snow storms. The island ferries schedule is busiest in the from May to October. Some service continues in other months. Tickets can be bought online. Reservations are not required, but you may want to reserve ahead of time if specific times are desired.
