The canal is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.
This bridge has a Stone Elliptical arch with rusticated voussoirs; end piers, raised band and parapet with coping. The bridge is a Grade II Historic England
listed building.
The bridge carries Melling Road over the canal, a road that passes inbetween the Aintree Race Course and Aintree Golf Course that are next to the canal.
There is a modern pedestrian bridge next to the bridge that was added as traffic levels increased.
