Mt Wells is a Capital Region District (CRD) park with several trails leading to the summit at 352 m (1155 ft). Just below the summit block is a benchmark fixed into the rock, Geodetic Survey Reference 1171 B. This benchmark is different from the usual municipal/provincial survey marks but one for a different purpose, a geodetic survey reference point to be used to determine things like subduction movement due to plate techtonics. Measurements from this reference point and many others can provide data on the movement of the Juan de Fuca plate and stresses on the Cascadia Fault. Megathrust earthquakes at magnitudes of 9 occur often every 300 to 600 years along this fault, the last one being in January 1701. Reference points like this can provide data on how plates are moving and how much the displacement is due to the next "big one" on the Cascadia Fault.
Unique Designation: Canada Geodetic Survey Reference 1171 B
