There is a new bridge at the southern end (2011) [over 3,400 vehicles/day in 2011] and three ferry routes during good weather.
Major islands exist on the Vermont side and comprise the county of Grand Isle. Essex Co may be in both states.
It is fed by the Canadian Richelieu River watershed, and the Green Mountains of Vermont, and the Adirondack rivershed on the NY side.
The Ausable River water shed and the Saranak contribute from the west.
Since 1823, the Erie Canal has connected to Lake Champlain.
