Large granite monument dedicated to the American Forces who defeated the British on this site on the 6 August, 1777.
The large marker reads:
Here the Battle of Oriskany was fought
On the sixth day of August, A.D. 1777
Here British invasion was checked and thwarted
Here General Nicholas A. Herkimer, intrepid leader
Of the American Forces, tho' mortally wounded,
Kept command of the fight til the enemy fled.
The life-blood of more than two hundred
Patriot heroes made this battleground
Sacred forever.
This monument was built A.D. 1883
By grateful dwellers in the Mohawk Valley.
Under direction of the Oneida Historical Society
Aided by the National Government
And the State of New York.
two sides contain bas relief brass images, one of Gen Herkimer the other of the battle.
There is a seasonal Visitor Centre nearby as well as interpretive signs and displays.
