Text on the memorial:
9-11 On the morning of September 11, 2001, nineteen Al-Queda terrorists hijacked four commercial jet airliners after takeoff from airports in Boston, Newark and Washington D.C. These hijackers used these planes as weapons against people of the United States. Below is the chronology of that tragic day now known to most Americans as 9-11 8:46 a.m. American Airlines is flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York City, setting its upper floors on fire. The North Tower collapsed at 10:05 a.m. 9:03 a.m. United Airlines flight 175 is flown into the South Tower of the WTC setting its upper floors on fire. The South Tower collapsed at 10:05 a.m. 9:37 a.m. American Airlines flight 77 is flown into the western side of the Pentagon outside Washington D.C. collapsing five floors and setting the area on fire. 10:10 a.m. United Airlines flight 93 crashes in rural Shanksville Pennsylvania as the heroic passengers fight its use against federal buildings in Washington D.C. The 9-11 attacks on America killed more than 2970 people among the fallen were 343 FDNY firefighters and paramedics 37 port authority police officers and 23 NYPD police officers These men and women heroically gave their lives helping others escape the burning WTC towers The response on 9-11 was the largest single day rescue in United States history. The Steel Beam The Steel Beam displayed in this memorial was recovered from the smoldering ruins of Ground Zero at the World Trade Center This Steel Beam came from the North Tower of the World Trade Center It is a gift of those who served at ground zero to the residents of Broome County in grateful appreciation for their compassion contributes and support following the 9-11 attacks. In the days and weeks that followed scores of local volunteers went to ground zero to assist with rescue and recovery efforts many collected and sent money food and supplies to sustain efforts at ground zero. This steel beam reminds us of more than the unprovoked attacks of 9-11 on America and its people this steel beam stands as testament to the unyielding strength resolve and resilience of the American people "Let every nation know whether it wishes us well or ill that we shall pay any price bear any burden meet any hardship support any friend oppose any foe in order to assure the survival and success of liberty" -President John F. Kennedy January 20, 1961 9-11-2001 New York State Governor George E. Pataki Senate Thomas W. Libous Assembly Jay Dinga Robert J. Warner Broome County Executive Jeffrey P.
