Jon Trevelise was staying in shape so he could once again participate in the 2014 Red Cross Tour de Rouge, Houston to New Orleans cycling fund raiser, which would be his 5th. While he was in Galveston, TX during the Easter Holiday 2014, he was riding his bicycle along the shoulder of FM 3005 that runs the length of Galveston Island. At about 11:30 AM on April 19, 2014, Jon was only a few miles from home while riding eastward toward Jamaica Beach, when he was hit by a Ford Taurus driven by 68 year old Melissa Smith. Ms. Smith was traveling eastbound on the emergency shoulder. Though his helmet was correctly in place, he sustained massive brain injuries from which he never recovered.
Jon was taken to the UT Medical Branch in Galveston with traumatic brain injuries. He was later removed from life support and moved to a Houston hospice care center where he died May 16, 2014. The driver, Melissa Smith, has since been arrested, charged, and found guilty of Criminally Negligent Homicide.
As a professional CPA, Jon Trevelise worked for and with many companies within Houston and beyond. Due to his winsome personality, he was effective in using his skills of business, finance, and fitness to raise charitable gifts, chair committees, and participate in events for organizations like the American Red Cross, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and the National Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. He didn't just ask others to participate, he walked his talk ... or road it ... by riding his bike from Houston to New Orleans for the American Red Cross Tour de Rouge or riding for charity in the MS 150 where he rode his bike 150 miles to raise donations for a cure for multiple sclerosis. The reason he was out riding along FM 3005 was to prepare for the then upcoming Tour de Rouge. He had ridden this over the past several years and had planned to do so again. He had raised tens of thousands of dollars for worthy organizations. Since one of his sons was born with special needs, Jon supported as a major contributor, fundraiser, and Chairman for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Special Children's Committee. Jon was active in his professional work, but he was just as active in his rather public private life. Jon Trevelise will be missed by not only his family, but by his wide assortment of friends.
