The old Newcastle,( the towns original name was changed to Toodyay in 1910 ), Gaol was built in 1865. It consisted of warder’s quarters, a courtroom, exercise yard, kitchen and storeroom, and nine cells. The walls were made of granite and iron stone and sealed with mortar. The courtyard walls were topped with bricks which were then rendered and covered with broken glass. The building ceased to be used as a gaol in 1907 and was then used as a private residence until the 1940's then fell into disrepair.
In 1962 the building was restored for use as a museum. The Old Gaol Museum was subsequently opened on 7 October 1962,making it the longest operating regional museum in Western Australia.
Each of the individual cells has a different theme ranging from famous outlaw and escapee Moondyne Joe, a memorialto the Dorizzi brothers who once called the gaol home and a cell few comforts – how it might have been for a European prisoner.
The front rooms have various items that were used in the kitchen and living room of a family living in the 1860's to 1900
