This cemetery dates from 1878, with the first recorded burial being that of a one year old child in 1884. St Barnabas' Anglican Church was built on land adjoining the cemetery, commencing in 1902, and finished in 1922.

Cannon Phillips had a strong influence in the design of St Barnabas Church, being a replica of the Grimsby English Church. The Cannon and his wife are buried in the cemetery adjacent to the church.
