Mrs. Sanders's modern, gray, granite, upright headstone has a simple inscription:

Her first husband, Billy Reed, died in 1885, and she later married Henry Ford Sanders, who died in 1908. Her Findagrave entry is worth a look, as there's a newspaper article there about her hundredth birthday. (visit link)

1899 - Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag" is copyrighted.
1909 - Joan of Arc is beatified.
1919 - Prohibition begins in the United States, lasting until 1933.
1929 - Herbert Hoover becomes US President, but unfortunately, cannot handle what awaits him on October 29th of this year.
1939 - New York Yankees baseball great Lou Gehrig retires. "Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth."
1949 - The Poe Toaster first appears at the grave of Edgar Allan Poe.
1959 - The music dies on February 3 with the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper, and pilot, Roger Peterson.
1960 - Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz divorce, bringing "I Love Lucy" to an end.
