On 11 Nov 1957 this blue Star Memorial Highway marker was unveiled in downtown Dilley, Texas, which at that time was on the main route of the US Highway 81.
After the Interstate 35 was built, the US 81 ran with VI 35 from Oklahoma South to Laredo for several decades. Finally, in the mid-1990s US 81 in Texas was shortened to the 79 miles between Decatur, Texas and the Oklahoma border.
Nevertheless, that part of old US 81, which runs through downtown Dilley is still proudly designated a Blue Star Memorial Highway. this marker stands proudly under a spreading live oak tree near the big plaster watermelon monument and the old fire engine at City Park downtown.
