The Grundlsee is an alpine lake in the Styrian part of the Salzkammergut region near Bad Aussee. It is located at the southern end of the Dead Mountains. To the east are the Toplitzsee and Kammersee. Covering an area of 4.22 square kilometers it is the largest lake in Styria. Homonymous to the lake is also called the town and municipality Grundlsee.
In Gößl the Toplitzbach flows into the lake, which then flows as Grundlseer Traun, one of the headwaters of the River Traun, in the direction of Bad Aussee from the outflow at the western end. Other major rivers that feed the Grundlsee, are the Zimitzbach (mouth near Gasthof Ladner) and Stimitz which opens about 80 meters south of the Toplitz in the Grundlsee.
The lake is surrounded by the mountains of the Dead Mountains, the beginning as follows hot from the south: Ressen, Zlaimkogel, Schoberwiese, Hundskogel, Backenstein, Häuslkogel, Reichenstein, Siniweller, Gössler Wand, Lawinenstein and Grasberg.
