"The honor of having been the first settlers, the pioneers, of this town seems to have fallen to Elijah Smith, Collins Luddington, Thomas Hollister, and Job Judd, Sr., all of whom came from Connecticut to Owego by way of the Susquehanna valley and thence journeyed up Owego creek to the point where the first improvement was made during the summer of the year 1793. Hollister, Smith, and Luddington were afterward permanent residents in the town"
