The tombstone of Alexander Hoffmann, the first Sheriff of Bandera Co. TX, and a veteran of the Mexican war, contains an unusual cause of death.
Life on the Texas frontier was hard -- and filled with danger.
Alexander Hoffmann probably came to Texas as one of Henri Castro's colonists. Henri Castro brought families from European countries to Texas, promising (and delivering) largre farms and town lots.
Alexander Hoffmann later served as the Sheriff of Bandera County TX (1856-1860) after having been a solider in the Mexican War.
Alexander Hoffmann must have been an adventurous and hardy man. His tombstone reads as follows:
"ALEXANDER HOFFMAN
Born in Bohemia
Killed by Indians Uvalde Co.
March 23, 1860.
Served in the Mexican War.
First Sheriff of Bandera Co."
(Note: Bohemia is modern-day Czechoslovakia.)
