Life on the 1840s Texas frontier was hard -- and so was the journey to get there. Mary Ann Rudinger took ill and died after carrying children to safety over streams on the arduous journey to D'Hanis in 1847.

Her tombstone reads as follows:

"MARY ANN RUDINGER
Age 18 years

The first death upon arrival of settlers at D’Hanis
May 25, 1847

Carrying smaller children over streams, she became ill and died on above date.

HER FATHER AND MOTHER ALSO BURIED HERE
JOSEPH AND MAGGIE (NEE BROWN)"

Mary was one of the original settlers of the town of D'Hanis, a member of on the the 29 families from Alsace-Lorriane who followed empresario Henri Castro to Medina County. Each family received a 20-acre farm and a town lot as an incentive to leave Europe and settle in Texas. For more on D'Hanis, see here: (visit link)
