The Okotoks Town Cemetery is one of the larger cemeteries in the area and located in Foothill County. It is just over 10 acres and is well maintained. There are approximately 2,300 interments and is still active. Continuing expansion and improvements are planned for the cemetery.
We located this You Are Here sign near the columbariums and the gravesite of Christina McGowan who was born in 1896 and passed away in 1997 at the age of 101.
First Nations people had led a nomadic existence in the Okotoks area for thousands of years prior to the arrival of the Europeans. The name of Okotoks, which is derived from the Blackfoot name "Okatok", which means "rock"
Okotoks is situated on the Sheep River, approximately 18 km south of of Calgary. In 2011 Okotoks had a population of over 24,500, making it the largest "town" in Alberta.
