Solomon Burt was born on Feb. 1 1759, the oldest son of David and Mary Burt. He was killed in the explosion of a powder mill situated on Mill River in Springfield, MA. The powder mill was making gunpowder for the Colonists fighting the British during the American Revolution.

Springfield is situated north of the Enfield Rapids, the first falls on the Connecticut River. It was the first town on the Connecticut River protected from attack by from the sea by naval vessels and, thus, was a major center for guns and munitions production.

The brownstone grave marker for Solomon Burt contains a crowned, winged cherub in the lunette and is inscribed:
