The Pals battalions of World War I were specially constituted battalions of the British Army comprising men who had enlisted together in local recruiting drives, with the promise that they would be able to serve alongside their friends, neighbours and colleagues ("pals"), rather than being arbitrarily allocated to battalions
The Preston Pals, as they were known, departed from Preston railway station in 1914 to join the Army.
The prominent war memorial is installed between platforms three and four at the railway station.
Lancashire's Lord Lieutenant, Lord Shuttleworth, officially unveiled the plaque in July 2012, which was produced by sculptor and letter carver John Shaw.
