This siren is located on the northeast edge of the city (pretty much on the city border, from looking at a city map), on Panorama Drive. At an elevation of 6118 feet, it's almost one of the highest spots in the city. The siren faces roughly southeast.
Per the
Cheyenne/Laramie County Emergency Management Agency:
"OUTDOOR WARNING SIRENS - there are 34 sirens located in Cheyenne. The sirens alert people WHO ARE OUTDOORS that a life threatening emergency has occurred. When you hear a siren, go inside and immediately tune to a local radio station and turn on your television. The broadcast stations will inform you of the emergency and tell you what action to take."
These are apparently tested on the first Friday of each month, for 1 to 3 minutes.
I could have sworn that I'd heard them actually used during weather emergencies a couple of times in the last decade, even in the last five years, and I ran across
this YouTube video that shows them actually in use on May 18, 2010.
