This 9.5' x 4.5' mural “Off to Northern Markers” by Joe De Young was completed with Section of Fine Arts funds in 1939.

In 1939, De Young painted Off to Northern Markets, for the Gatesville post office. Although a California artist, De Yong grew up among Texas and Oklahoma cowboys, providing him with some knowledge of cattle drives. (Fun fact: De Young worked on this Gatesville mural while serving as technical advisor and costume designer for the Cecil B. De Mille movie Union Pacific.)
At the forefront of the painting is the chuck wagon pulled by mules. Beyond the wagon is the remuda of horses. And in the far distance is the herd of cattle headed North.
