text: " Oxford's Master Designer on this site Theodore Burr built Oxford's first bridge in 1802. His patented Burr Truss Arch bridges were built in several states and spanned the Hudson and Susquehanna Rivers. Many of his bridges still stand. He was America's preeminent bridge builder of the early 19th century. His nearby mansion-library holds a collection of materials pertaining to his and other covered bridges so symbolic of the energy and ingenuity of our forebears."
