Established in 1935, Valley of Fire was Nevada’s first state park. It contains areas of brightly colored sandstone, unusual rock formations, some petrified logs and prehistoric petroglyphs. It has also been used as a filming location for TV, movies and commercials. The red and yellow sandstone can reflect sunlight in such a way as to appear to be burning, hence the name “Valley of Fire.” There are numerous hiking trails a visitor’s center and a well maintained paved road that takes you throughout the park.

According to the USPS press release, the stamp art was created by Nevada resident Ron Spears who captured the Fire Canyon area of the park at dawn. The scene is located at the end of a spur road that leads to Fire Canyon.

Being located in southern Nevada, Valley of Fire State Park is an easy day trip from Las Vegas and as such attracts quite a few visitors. It’s a beautiful place and well worth a visit and besides, you’ll lose less money and a good hike will help walk off some of those “all-you-can-eat” buffets. In addition (no doubt also because of its proximity to Las Vegas) you can get married here! There are four areas of the park that allow weddings. Unfortunately for philatelists, Fire Canyon is not one of them.
